His Eminence  Damaskinos Archbishop of Johannesburg and Pretoria was born D Papandreou in Ermione, Argolida in 1957. Following his school studies he entered University where he received degrees in Political Science and Theology. He entered the ranks of the clergy in 1987, being ordained Deacon and Archimandrite. He served in Greece and in Africa as a Priest, preacher, catechist and missionary. Following a proposal by His Beatitude Theodoros II, Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa, he was unanimously elected by the Holy Synod of the Patriarchate as Bishop of Ghana on 27th October 2004. He was consecrated by the Venerable Primate of the Alexandrian Church on 30th October in the Holy Church of St Savvas in Alexandria. On 7th October 2010 he was elected by the Holy and Sacred Synod as Metropolitan of Johannesburg and Pretoria .

The Archdiocese of Johannesburg and Pretoria was established by Patriarchal and Synodal Decree in 1927 and in its jurisdiction are the areas from East Africa, the Equator down to the Cape of Good Hope.
