In a particularly warm atmosphere on Wednesday 18 December, the new Governor of Alexandria, Mr Mohamed Al-Sherif, welcome His Beatitude Theodoros II, Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa.

Governor Mr. Al-Sherif, who undertook his duties on 27th November. Expressed his respect and his appreciation for the Greek Orthodox Church of Africa, which has been based in the flagship city of Alexandria for 2,000 years, with the enormous connection that history brings to the relations between Greece and Egypt.

“We stand by the Patriarchate of Alexandria, The Governor of Alexandria, Mr. Mohamed Al-Sherif declared to the Primate of the Second-Throne patriarchate of Orthodoxy.

For his part, Patriarch Theodore expressed his gratitude and called on the new Governor to convey his respect for the support and security which is afforded the Alexandrian Church to the Egyptian Leader, President Abdel Fatah Al Sisi.

Patriarch Theodore and the new Governor of Alexandria together expressed their satisfaction regarding the excellent relations of the two countries together with Cyprus, for the good of the peoples of the three countries.

In conclusion, the Patriarch invited the Governor to visit the See of the Patriarchate, in the New Year, where traditionally the Governor conveys the wishes of President Al Sisi for the New Year, on the day of Theophany, which is majestically celebrated in Alexandria on the shores of the Mediterranean.

During the visit to the new Governor, the Patriarch of Alexandria was accompanied by the Patriarchal Vicar of Alexandria, Metropolitan Narcissus of Naucratis.
