As of today, 26th October 3009, the Sacristy of the Patriarchate of Alexandria, the costs of which are totally borne by the “Stavros Niarchos” Institute,  is nearing completion.

His Beatitude Theodoros II, Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa expressed his great satisfaction and gratitude on this joyous event, as he signed the acceptance of this substantial donation from the above-named Institute. The sacristy will house in its exhibition historical works and significant relics of ecclesiastical art of the history of the Alexandrian Church from the martyred era of its Enlightener, the Apostle and Evangelist Mark right up to its contemporary missionary steps on the African earth.

Remember, that in the underground areas of the Patriarchal Mansion there is an enormous “catacomb” of the Ptolemaic era, which was used to collect rainwater. This exceptional area will be suitably transformed, according to modern Museum principles, to become the Patriarchal Sacristy.

On the 8th November 2009, the representatives of the Institute in the persons of Messrs. Ioannis Dervakis, deputy executive Director of the Institute, Theodoros Maravelia, Director of the Technical Department and Christos Katharios, Civil Engineer, are expected to arrive in Alexandria, in order to organize allocation issues in collaboration with His Beatitude.
