With deep sadness, the Patriarchate of Alexandria and All Africa announces the passing to the Lord of His Eminence Elder Metropolitan Petros of Caesarea, formerly Aksum.

The late Metropolitan of blessed emory fell asleep in the Lord today, 24th November 2020, in Athens.

His Beatitude Theodoros II, Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa, presently on a pastoral visit to Kisumu in Kenya, served a Trisagion for the repose of the soul of the late Metropolitan Petros, together with Hierarchs of the Throne.

The funeral for the late Metropolitan will take place on Thursday 26th November 2020, after the Divine Liturgy, at the Church of the Holy Virgin Marmariotissa (Halandri) and the burial will be in the cemetery in Halandri. His Beatitude will be represented by His Eminence Emmanuel of Prolemaid.

His Eminence the Elder Metropolitan of Caesarea (born George Giakoumelos), was born in Zakynthos in 1932. He studied Theology at the Theological Faculty of the University Athens. He was ordained Deacon in 1955 and Priest in 1956, He served as Chancellor of the Holy Metropolis of Elassona from 1956 to 1965. In 1970 he became a member of the clergy of the Patriarchate of Alexandria. On 17th December 1972 he was ordained titular Bishop of Babylonos. He served as Patriarchal Vicar of Cairo from 1972 to 1979. On 30th November 1979 he was elected as Metropolitan of Aksum. He also served as Patriarchal Exarch of the Metropolis of Kenya from 1996 to 1997. He was also the local tenens of the Patriarchal Throne in 2004. On 27th October 2004, he was appointed Exarch of the Patriarchate in Athens and he was awarded the title of Elder. On 26th November 2018, he resigned. On that same day he was elected titular Metropolitan Elder of Caesarea in Africa.
