On 3rd August 2023, His Beatitude Theodoros II, Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa welcomed to El Alamein, at the monument of Greeks fallen during the historic battle of 1942, His Excellency the Prime Minister of Greece Mr. Kyriakos Mitsotakis, as part of his official visit to Egypt.
During their meeting the two men expressed the mutual feelings of respect, appreciation and love, which characterize their years of personal friendship, while they had a brief private discussion on important issues.
This was followed by the laying of a wreath at the monument to the fallen Greeks by His Excellency the Prime Minister, after which His Beatitude offered a short prayer, offered a holy icon of the St Kyriakos the Recluse to Mr. Mitsotakis.
Within the framework of the above ceremony, His Beatitude also had brief talks with Mr. Georgios Gerapetritis, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Mr. Nikolaos Dendias, Minister of National Defense who are accompanying the Greek Prime Minister,
It is noted that the honorary event was attended by His Eminence Panteleimon Metropolitan of Naucratis, Chief Secretary of the Holy Synod of the Patriarchate of Alexandria, His Excellency Mr. Nikolaos Papageorgiou, Ambassador of Greece to Cairo and Alexandria, the Honourable Consuls of Greece in Cairo and Alexandria, the Chairmen of the Hellenic Communities of Cairo and Alexandria, high-ranking state and military officers of the State of Egypt and other officials.
