THE CELEBRATION OF THE HOLY MEMORY OF THE GREAT MARTYR GEORGE

     His Beatitude Theodoros II, Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa conducted the services for St George at the ancient Monastery of St George on 1st and 2nd May with particular splendour.

     On 1st May Great Vespers was conducted, officiated by His Beatitude who also preached the homily, together with His Eminence Nicholas of Ermopolis and His Grace Nikodimos of Nitria, Patriarchal Vicar of Cairo. His Beatitude then inaugurated the newly  set up exhibition of Holy Icons, and ecclesiastical appurtenances, the costs of which were born by Mrs. Stella Kyriazis. The exhibition will be overseen by Mr. Vadis, a Member of the Hellenic Community of Cairo, for all pilgrims and visitors.

     On the 2nd May, a Patriarchal Divine Liturgy was held, conducted by His Beatitude, accompanied by both the above-named hierarchs. Two choirs, who had come to venerate at the Church, sang the hymns: the polyphonic Choir of the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour in Moscow and the Choir of the Municipality of Ierapetra in Crete .

     Prior to the end of the Liturgy, His Beatitude gave the homily, speaking on the life and works of St George, as well as the history of the ancient Monastery of the same name, which is undergoing full renovation. The procession of the Icon of St George followed.  

     Present at these spiritual gatherings  were the Ambassador of Greece to Egypt Mr. Alexios Ioannis Zepos, representatives of the Greek Consulate in Cairo, the Hellenic Community and the Arabic-speaking community of the Egyptian capital, other dignitaries and many faithful pilgrims.

     On 3rd May His Beatitude attended a function of the Arabic-speaking community for the completion of fifty years from the publication of the pamphlet which is printed in Arabic and concerns Orthodox witness, and which is also sent out to the Communities of the Diaspora.
