FOUNDING OF A HOLY MONASTERY IN UGANDA BY HIS BEATITUDE

   On the Sunday of Orthodoxy, 13^th March 2011, His Beatitude Theodoros II, Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa, following the Divine Liturgy and accompanied by His Eminence Metropolitan Jonah of Kampala, the Holy Clergy, His Excellency the Ambassador of Egypt, the Muslim religious leader of the area and many faithful, went to an adjacent area to the Parish of St Antony, Monte, and performed the rite of the Foundation of the first Orthodox Holy Monastery in Africa, honoured in the name of the Venerable Mary of Egypt.

    The Sisters which will dwell in the Monastery when, with the Grace of God, it is completed, comprises three indigenous Sisters Maria, Thavoria and Theosemni, who lived for two years in the Holy Monastery of Panagia Chrysopege in Chania, Crete and were taught Greek, ancestral church music and monastic handiworks.

    In hailing the start of the building works of this monastic dwelling, His Beatitude spoke of the contribution and importance of Monasticism in the Orthodox Church and expressed the joyful and hopeful feelings that are created by Monastic Communities on the African continent.
