Protocol Number: 161/2013
To His Excellency Mr. UHURU KENYATTA, President of KENYA
Your Excellency,
Through the present Patriarchal Letter, we would like to express to Your Excellency and to the noble people of Kenya our deepest condolences and our most sincere sympathy, sharing the grieving sorrow and unutterable pain caused by the death and injuries of the people, who were viciously attacked by ruthless terrorists at the Westgate Mall.
This irrational act of blind terroristic violence constitutes a tragic moment for the Kenyan nation, Africa and the world at large. These heinous actions amount to a total discredit and perversion of the meaning of every religious tradition, as religions in their entirety ought to operate as agents of reconciliation among people. In particular, they are totally incompatible with those who believe in Christ who, in His divine and human nature, hypostatizes love, according to the words of John “God is love” (John 4:8), peace as “the peace of God which passes all understanding” (Philippians 4:7), and finally life itself according to the true Gospel word “I am the Resurrection and the life” (John 11:25).
We strongly condemn all those who commit inhuman actions of terrorism or who show tolerance towards it, and we wholeheartedly pray the Kenyan people to find comfort and consolation in Our Saviour who came to our world so as ‘all who believe in Him, should not perish but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).
Fervently praying to God,
†THEODOROS II
Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria and all Africa
